Adding Ruffled Sleeves to Plain-Jane Tees

The little trick I have to share with y’all this evening is another use for the jelly roll I used on my Ruffled Autumn Leaf Tee. It is such a terrific feeling to use the same supplies in a variety of ways! If you are wanting to add a ruffled accent to a sleeve, though, and you don’t have jelly roll strips of fabric on hand, any 2.5-inch strips of fabric will do. This is a great way to use up scraps!

If you haven’t already, head over to check out the cheater’s method for creating rolled hems that I shared last week. I used it for this project, and I was tickled with the result!

Please note that in the photos for this tutorial, one side of my strips is hemmed instead of finished with a faux rolled hem. I did this before I had perfected my method, so please disregard the photos and used a rolled hem for all three sides as indicated.

I just love what a difference a little ruffle makes on a simple tee!
 Helpful Hints and Tips

  • I am a shorty-torty, so shirt sleeves are generally a mile too long on me. For my top, I shortened my sleeves by about 6 inches so that the finished sleeve would be a nice 3/4 length, but you can feel free to shorten your sleeves more or less depending upon your personal preference.
  • If you want a fuller, more ruffled sleeve, you can absolutely make the strips 2 times as long as the circumference of your sleeve, or even more. It is up to you!
  • Wanting to create a peasant-style sleeve? Use this method with wider strips of fabric.
  • If rolled hems aren’t your thing, a regular 1/4-inch hem will work fine here, too! You’ll need to factor in that subtraction of a 1/2 inch, though, when you are considering the finished width of your ruffle.

My apologies for not having posted this yesterday as I had mentioned in Friday’s post. Somehow, I hadn’t accounted for an impromptu showing to throw off my blogging game!

A marvelous evening to all!

Great idea! I always have the opposite problem (my sleeves are too long) but this is great for my little girl.

Love it! All of my kiddos’ long sleeve shirts will be sporting ruffles by the end of the week if I don’t control myself! ;)
