Ann of On Sutton Place never ceases to impress with her delicious recipes, and today’s recipe for apple buckle is no exception! The sweet simplicity of this dessert is perfect for showcasing fall apples, and it would be perfect served on its own or with a nice dollop of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
I’m happy to be back here at Positively Splendid with a super easy Apple Buckle recipe. If you’re not sure what a “buckle” is, just think crisp or cobbler. They are all basically the same thing with slight ingredient differences. Buckles usually have an egg in the topping where a crisp does not.
The variety of apples you use is totally a personal choice. Tart apples are not my favorite so for this recipe I used the variety “Gala.” They baked easily yet were not mushy. There’s nothing worse than a mushy fruit dessert (in my opinion!)
1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. nutmeg
1 egg beaten
1 stick butter melted (if using salted butter you can use 1/4 t. salt)
6 large apples
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. After washing, slice apples and put into a large casserole (or 2 smaller casseroles.) Sprinkle with sugar. In a large bowl or bowl of a standing mixer put the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Begin mixing and slowly add the beaten egg. Stir until the mixture resembles course sand. Put topping on apples. Pour melted butter over top. Bake for 40 min. Serve warm if desired.
With Fall right around the corner, this is the perfect dessert for a family dinner or gathering. With an adjusted baking time, this recipe could easily be doubled to feed a crowd!
