Stenciled Pegboard Craft Organizer

February 10, 2016 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Each year this time, I get the itch to get my creative space back in order! Today, I’m teaming up with the brand-new Plaid Creators team to share the update I made to my all-time favorite craft storage idea: my DIY pegboard craft organizer. With just a bit of paint, it’s amazing how this organizer now reflects the romantic, elegant vibe I wanted this space to convey.

For this project, I found so much inspiration in this terrific list of Plaid’s top 10 DIY trends for 2016, which includes inspiration for adding romantic, authentic, bold and organic touches to projects, in addition to 6 other fantastic ideas. For my craft pegboard, I opted to go with the romantic, subtle hues and stenciled designs that are really making a splash this year, and I am so thrilled with how the understated elegance truly allows all of my brightly colored supplies and tools to shine! Read on for all the details.

Stenciled Pegboard Craft Organizer - incredibly functional and so pretty!

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Plaid. All opinions are entirely my own.

For this project, you will need…

  • DIY framed pegboard, customized to the dimensions of your space–Check out my tutorial here!
  • FolkArt Home Decor Chalk – White Adirondack
  • FolkArt Home Decor Wax – White
  • FolkArt Home Decor Brushes – Chalk and Wax Brush Set
  • FolkArt Home Decor Wall Stencil – Ornate Damask
  • Plaid Stencil Tape
  • Clean, lint-free cloth

To begin, paint the entire surface of the pegboard. I opted to paint my board the same color as the walls in my room to create a cohesive look. Another terrific option, though, would be to choose any of the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk colors–they would be perfect for this project!

Once the base coat is dry, it is time for the fun part–stenciling! Because of the grid pattern of the pegboard, placing the stencil is very easy to do. Simply line up the placement markings at the center of the top and sides of the stencil, and use stencil tape to fix the stencil in place.

With the stencil secured to the pegboard, pour a small amount of the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk onto a foam plate, and dip the chalk brush into the paint, dabbing off the excess paint onto the plate. Working in one quadrant of the stencil design at a time, gently apply paint over the stencil by dabbing the paint onto the surface in an up and down motion. (Applying paint in an up and down motion instead of side to side is important to ensure paint doesn’t bleed under the stencil.)

When the entire design is covered with paint, gently lift the stencil from the pegboard to magically reveal a beautiful damask design!

Helpful tip: When stenciling, if you discover that a particular part of the design isn’t adequately detailed in paint, use a small brush to hand paint those details onto the design.

Repeat the process above to create as many designs onto your board as desired. Allow the paint to dry complete, at least one hour.

When the paint is dry, apply a thin later of the FolkArt Home Decor Wax over the entire stenciled design using the wax brush, working in one quadrant of the design as you did for the stenciling portion of the project. Using the clean, lint-free cloth, gently wipe away any of the excess wax. Allow to dry overnight before using a cloth to buff the wax to a nice sheen.

Your stenciled pegboard craft organizer is ready to be hung in your space!

(I detail exactly how to mount the board onto the wall in the tutorial linked above.)

Now it’s time to put this beauty to good use to store any number of craft tools and supplies!

For my board, I purchased a pegboard accessory kit from a home improvement store and used the various hooks, pegs, and baskets from the kit, as well as some other buckets I had on hand, to house my supplies.

The baskets are perfect for bottles of various sizes…

…while the pegs are just right for holding tools like glue guns, hole punches, scissors and pliers.

Small galvanized buckets hung on hooks are perfect for keeping brushes handy…

…and the same hooks are terrific for storing other products in plain sight.

I love that the damask design peeks through from behind all of the brightly colored supplies to create a layered effect that makes this organizer not only incredibly functional, but also beautiful!

Beautiful project, Amy! You have made craft storage so elegant. I was just wondering what color is the background of the pegboard?
