Today’s project idea from Susan at Living with Punks is so fabulous, I have been clamoring to try it out with my kiddos from the start! So much potential for an abundance of creativity!

Hi all!

fall-family-portraits_01{Me with all my punks}

I’m Susan and I blog at Living with Punks. I absolutely love Positively Splendid and am honored Amy asked me over to help out with surviving the summer.   I don’t know about you, but where I’m from, it gets HOT and we spend alot of time outdoors.  So, not only is this craft outdoor-sy, it’s easy enough that you probably have the supplies on hand.

When I was little, I had an obsession with rocks {just ask my mom}.  I would come home after school and water the decorative rocks we had around our pool so they would shine in the sun. {Insert yikes! here}   So, when I was thinking about a childhood craft, I naturally turned to rocks. Rocks are a perfect alternative to paper for painting.  They are usually in abundance and their shapes can give you a creative nudge as to what they should become.

MATERIALS

PS-Painted Rocks 053

Rocks
Acrylic paint in your choice of colors
Paint brushes
Clear satin spray sealer
Sharpie

PS-Painted Rocks 002
Wash/Dry your rocks to free them of any dirt (ooh, look at the shiny’s)   Sorry.

PS-Painted Rocks 006
Choose a color and completely cover it in paint

Using alternating colors, paint a consistent design on each rock…

PS-Painted Rocks 012
Get creative…here I am using a sharpie for extra black definition

PS-Painted Rocks 015
Once you have all your rocks painted and they are dried, place on a dropcloth…

And make ‘em all shiny by spraying them with the clear gloss spray

I suggest putting them in a glass bowl so the kids can easily see their artwork

And what garden wouldn’t be complete without a little ladybug?

I hope you are inspired to let your kids paint some rocks today…
let their imagination run wild!

I would love to share some more ideas with you over on my blog Living with Punks…
Take a look…

    Those are so cute! There is no way my boys’ painted rocks would ever turn out that cute though…they would probably want to paint camo on theirs:)
