Vellum Tea Light Lanterns (Silhouette Promo Time!)

July 5, 2012 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

I love the little electronic tea lights that bring gentle candlelight to centerpieces without the worry of a lit flame. This time of year, it seems there is always an abundance of events to plan that call for special ways to gussy up tablescapes, and the idea I’m sharing today couples the flicker of the battery-operated tea lights with translucent vellum to make fun mini-lanterns that emit a romantic glow!

I came across the inspiration for these little lanterns here. The basic idea behind them is to cut a rectangle with vertical lines running along the entire length. You can do this by hand with scissors, but I thought it would make things go so much more quickly by using my Silhouette Studio Designer Edition software instead. I love being able to streamline projects!

Using my Designer Edition software, I drew rectangles that were about twice as long as they were tall.  After that, I drew vertical lines across the length of each rectangle, leaving an equal distance between each line. The built-in ruler and guidelines in the Designer Edition software are terrific for creating detailed projects like this one!

(I’ll also show you the template without the grid for a better view.)

Once the designing is done, the rest of the process is a piece of cake! Cut out as many lanterns as you desire from decorative sheets of vellum. (You can also use other types of paper here, but I love the romantic glow the vellum allows.)

Gently fold each one in half lengthwise, as shown…

Apply a line of adhesive to one of the short ends, and create a cylinder by overlapping and adhering the ends.

Use your hand to gently press down on the lantern for added dimension.

That’s it!

Isn’t the way the light shines through the vellum pretty? These would be a perfect, inexpensive option for wedding centerpieces. The same romantic glow of candles sans the worry of an open flame!

I mentioned above how great the ruler tool in the Designer Edition software is, but it also includes these other great features:

  • Ability to open, manipulate, and cut .svg files
  • Rhinestone tools to convert designs into rhinestone templates and create your own rhinestone designs
  • Sketch tools to convert designs into several styles of sketchable art
  • Creative knife tools to allow you to clip designs using different patterns
  • Enhanced eraser set to modify designs with more precision

Right now, there is a terrific deal on the Designer Edition Software. Check it out!

Receive $80 off when you buy a Silhouette CAMEO plus the Designer Edition software for $269.99!

Already have a CAMEO? You can still get the Designer Edition software for $24.99 (50% off!).

Head here to take advantage of this deal by using the code POSITIVELY at checkout. (The sale ends on July 11th.)
