These adorable DIY graduation cap cupcake toppers are the perfect way to add a handmade touch to any graduation celebration! I love that they come together in minutes, and when paired with yummy cupcakes from the bakery section in your local grocery store, these are a festive and easy way to celebrate a graduation. To make DIY Graduation Cap Cupcake Toppers, you will need…
- Wood candy sticks
- Black acrylic craft paint
- Paint brush
- Styrofoam block
- Black construction paper
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Hole punch
- Baker’s twine
- Fork
- Hot glue
- Cupcake wrappers
Paint the top knob on the candy stick with the black acrylic paint using the paint brush. Insert the unpainted end of the stick into the Styrofoam block, and set aside to dry completely.
Using the ruler and pencil, cut (1) square from the black construction paper that is 2×2″ and (1) strip that is .75 x 5″.
Punch a hole at the center of the square piece.
Form the construction paper strip into a loop, and secure the ends together with hot glue.
To make the tassel for the cap, cut a 3-inch section of the baker’s twine, and align it with the top tine of the fork.
Working from the bottom tine of the fork to the top, begin wrapping the twine around the fork…
…and continue wrapping 15 times or so around. Make sure to keep the ends of the 3-inch section at the top out of the way as you wrap.
Cut another 3-inch section of twine, and insert it down and up through the space between the first and section tines of the fork so that it wraps around all of the layers of twine. Secure the piece tightly with a knot, and trim the ends of the knotted piece as closely as possible to the knot.
Remove the piece from the fork, and use scissors to cut through all of the loops on the bottom of the piece to separate them into individual sections. Trim the tassel so it is nice and even. Secure the top hanger piece to the tassel with a tight knot.
Affix the tassel directly next to the hole at the center of the square construction paper piece with a small dab of hot glue.
Apply a ring of hot glue around the rim of the loop piece and affix it to the bottom of the square piece.
Apply a small amount of hot glue to the underside of the knob on the wood candy stick piece, and insert it down through the hole in the square piece, concealing the ends of the tassel with the knob.
Now, grab some yummy cupcakes from the grocery store. Any flavor, any kind! I love using pre-made cupcakes for projects like this one.
Wrap the bottom of each cupcake with a wrapper, and then insert one of the graduation cap cupcake toppers into the center of each one. In no time at all, you have a delicious and festive treat to show a special graduate how proud you are of their big accomplishment!
These would be absolutely perfect for graduation gatherings of all types: pre-school, kindergarten, high school, college and others!
The tiny little tassels are so festive, and they can be made in any color for a personal touch.
