5 Tips for Centerpieces without Flowers

March 29, 2018 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Create unique and unusual centerpieces without flowers with my five helpful tips. I’m showing you how with my rustic spring centerpiece idea!

This year on my Easter table, I’ve decided to go with a rustic farmhouse theme and incorporate my DIY rustic wood cake stand along with some other fun elements I’ve added recently to my collection. It can be hard to find ideas for centerpieces that don’t involve flowers, so this spring centerpiece idea is great for those times when something unique and unexpected is called for! Continue reading to check out my Easter table decorations, along with my 5 best tips for making centerpieces without flowers.

I decided to use my tiered cake stand to display some super cute artificial veggies I’ve collected recently. The beet and pea clusters are ornaments from Pier 1 that can be hung with jute twine, and the little cabbages are actually napkin rings. (Love them!) The carrots are all from the seasonal section at Michaels. Everything looks perfect on my farmhouse kitchen table. I love all of the bright color!Wood Slice Cake Stand Spring Centerpiece without FlowersWood Slab Cake Stand

My Best Tips for Making Centerpieces without Flowers

  • Strive for lots of great texture! All of the elements in my Easter centerpiece have great texture and feel to them: the rough wood, the grassy raffia elements on the vegetable accents, etc. Moss, rocks, glass stones and other items are other great items for adding textural contrast to unusual centerpieces. This log tealight centerpiece idea is a great way to add some rustic texture to a table.

  • Check out the produce aisle. There are so many great fresh fruit and vegetable options to use in DIY centerpieces! Some of my favorite items are citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges, or gourds like winter squash or pumpkins for the fall.
  • Add height. A hallmark of most floral centerpieces is that they tend to add height to a table, so strive to find other ways to give some varying height to a display with other elements. My tiered dessert stand here is a great way to do so, but other ideas might be to use stacked books, lanterns, or even inverted wine glasses to add elevation. In my colorful fall tablescape, I used a pretty cake marble cake plate to add height.

  • Use a textile foundation. A centerpiece of any type really needs to be layered on a fabric base of some sort in order to pull the entire look together. Aside from a standard tablecloth, table runners, cloth napkins, or even small accent throws are a great way to bring a cozy textile feel into the equation. My easy DIY table runner pattern is a great way to add a textile touch.

  • Use what you have on hand. Get creative! A collection of old postcards, natural elements from your back yard, or just about anything under the sun can be used to make an unusual centerpiece that is inexpensive and unique. Pore through your seasonal decor items for unexpected inspiration, too, like I did with my cute Easter vegetables here.
