Handmade Fabric Appliqué Greeting Cards

August 8, 2013 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Handmade greeting cards are one of my favorite ways to add a personal touch to gifts (and save money, too!), and today Carrie from Worth Pinning is here to share a fabulous idea for creating handmade cards using your fabric fabrics. There are so many possibilities for this technique!

After several rainy days, we needed a rainy day project.  It seemed like a perfect day to get a jump on a stash of handmade fabric applique cards.  When I was a kid, we rarely attached a store bought birthday card to a gift.  Ironic since my parents owned a store and sold greeting cards.  With all of the birthday parties my kids have attended over the years, I’ve passed that “I’m not going to spend $5 on a card to go with the gift” along to my children.
To begin this project, you will need an image for the card design, double stick fusible web, fabric scraps, scissors, permanent markers, cardstock and a warm iron.Select an image- you can source the image from a coloring book or free clip art.

The image will be traced in reverse on double sized fusible web.  Use a light-box or window for tracing.  Make sure you trace from the backside so the image is reversed.  Then tape the fusible web over the image and trace the image.  We are tracing the bat and ball separate because we will be using a different fabric for the bat and for the ball.

Rough cut each piece and then iron it to the reverse side of the fabric.
Cut on the line and then peel the paper from the back side of the cutout.
Use a permanent marker to add details like the bat handle.

Iron the pieces onto the cardstock.  You can add lettering and a message on the inside of the card.  My 10 year old son made this card by himself (with supervision, of course…hot iron!) for his cousin’s birthday next week.

Trace, iron & cut several images to make an assortment of cards to have on hand for any occasion.
You can also quilt and stitch around the fabric applique for added detail (like the deer and green quilt block below).
Make a greater impression with a more personalized card for those you care about in your life!  Make several so you can avoid those extra trips to the store for a card.  You can find more projects on Carrie’s blog, Worth Pinning.

This is a great idea to use with my grand children and the nursing homes in my area as they always need cards. Good idea to make several at one time while the iron is hot.
