With Halloween right around the corner, there is still plenty of time to put together a fun handmade costume for a little superhero in your life. This year, my youngest son wants to be Batman, and instead of investing in a spendy ready-made costume, I decided to team up with Michaels to make one of my own–all for less than $5! Everyone knows an essential to just about any superhero costume is a flashy cape, so I set to work creating one that requires absolutely no sewing and just about 10 minutes of total time. My secret? Using a plain black t-shirt as a starting point! The end result is a costume that is easy AND super. You can’t beat that! Let’s get started making a cape for a super little guy or girl in your life!

For this project, you will need…
- A plain t-shirt in any color (Opt for a shirt about 2 sizes larger than the child normally wears so the cape is long enough)
- Fabric marking pen
- Clear ruler
- Shears
- Felt
- Fabric glue
- Template for a special logo, monogram, etc. (I found my Batman logo through a quick Google search)
Directions:
Lay the t-shirt face down on a work surface. Using the clear ruler and marking pen, draw a line starting just to the left of the neckband down at an angle to the lower left corner of the shirt. Draw another line on the right-hand side of the shirt in the same fashion.
Use the shears to trim along each of these lines, making sure to cut only through the back side of the shirt and not the front as you cut.
Fold the front of the shirt away from the back, as shown. Use the shears to trim along the outside of the neck opening, leaving the neckband intact.
Use the template to cut a decorative motif from the felt. Affix the felt pieces to the back of the cape with fabric glue.
Your super easy, super fun superhero cape is complete!
To wear, simply slip the neckband over the child’s head.
Paired with a pair of black pants and a black tee, along with a ready-made bat mask, my little guy’s new Batman cape has him totally fixed up for trick-or-treating this year! I opted to make a quick sash and an additional bat decal with leftover felt that I pinned onto the t-shirt with safety pins to complete the look. This same concept would work for any superhero you can imagine. There are so many possibilities!
