Happy Flag Day! Today, I’m sharing a fun summer wreath project that pays homage to the Stars and Stripes. The star accents in this DIY patriotic wreath give this project tons of personality, and if you’re looking for a great way to add a touch of patriotic red, white and blue to any space in your home, this is an afternoon project for you! Read on for all of the details for how to create a DIY patriotic wreath of your own this summer.
To make this DIY patriotic wreath, you will need…
- (3) 4-inch 3D wood stars
- Blue craft paint (I recommend Martha Stewart Crafts Multi-Surface Satin paint in Slate Gray)
- Foam brush
- 12-inch grapevine wreath
- Rustic tin stars in assorted sizes
- 2.5-inch red burlap ribbon
- 2.5-inch ivory burlap ribbon
- Hot glue
To begin, use the foam brush to apply 2-3 coats of craft paint to the 3D wood stars, or until the desired coverage is achieved. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Wrap the ivory burlap ribbon around the left-hand side of the wreath, until about 1/3 of the wreath is covered, as shown. Secure the ribbon with dabs of hot glue as you go.
Arrange the stars on the surface of the burlap-wrapped portion of the wreath until you are satisfied with the overall design. Secure each star to the wreath with hot glue, overlapping the edges of the stars for added dimension. I opted to layer some of the smallest tin stars on top of the wooden stars to create a center on each one. Note: As you adhere the stars, leave a 2-inch gap for the bow, which will be added in the next step.
Create a bow with the red ribbon burlap. Secure to the wreath with hot glue in the open space you left between the stars in the previous step.
Your DIY patriotic wreath is complete!
This would make a lovely statement on a front door, or displayed indoors on a wreath stand. I love to create wreaths like this one to tuck into bookshelves or display on my mantel throughout the year. Wreaths truly are one of my favorite creative projects!
The combination of colors and textures here really gives this wreath tons of great personality. The dimensional wooden stars used here would also be great strung on a garland to use as party decor.
