Basically, the process entails painting the surface of a craft pumpkin with white chalky finish paint. When the paint is dry, a grid pattern is created with a pencil, and then a buffalo check pattern is created on the surface of the pumpkin by filling in the appropriate squares in the grid with either black or grey paint. I was incredibly pleased with how surprisingly easy the process was!
Pro Tip: Any time I work on a painted project like this one, I like to cover my work surface with freezer paper. The wax coating on the back of the paper does a great job of preventing any paint from seeping through and damaging my desk or table!
Also, to keep the bottom edge of the pumpkin from becoming stuck to the paper as the paint dries, poke three push pins into the bottom of the pumpkin to work as a “stand” to keep the pumpkin elevated from the work surface.
I am absolutely loving anything with a buffalo check motif right now, so these buffalo check pumpkins are right up my alley for fall decorating this year! I love them in the black and white color scheme, but you could easily swap out the white for a fun orange to go with a more traditional Halloween theme.
Because the craft pumpkins are carve-able, a fun idea would be to remove the top of one of the painted pumpkins to create a container to hold a pretty fall-colored mum, or even some of the lovely faux flowers from the fall section at Michaels. I love the idea of creating miniature versions of these pumpkins to add to a wreath or a garland, too!
