All of my kiddos are gearing up for fun school parties next week to celebrate Halloween, and I was asked by my oldest daughter’s teacher to come up with a game of some sort for her kindergarten class to play during the festivities. The moment she posed the question, I knew that I absolutely had to make this Funkin Pumpkin Bean Bag Toss game, an idea by the brilliant folks at Jo-Ann. Using their step-by-step tutorial, I put together a game that I know all of the kiddos are going to love! And the best part is, because this game is constructed of Funkins instead of fresh pumpkins, it will be able to be enjoyed at school parties for many years to come!
The PDF version of the tutorial from Jo-Ann outlines all of the steps for crafting this game, but here is the basic process I followed to create mine:
To begin, I used a sharp, serrated knife to carve a hole out of the front of each of my five Funkins.
Instead of painting the entire inside of each pumpkin as the how-to specifies, I opted to paint only the sanded the edges of the opening with a layer of white acrylic paint and some glow-in-the-dark paint. That glowing ring will look so neat when the lights are out!
Because I already had the leaf templates cut out from my Plush Patchwork Pumpkins, I opted to use the large and medium versions of those instead of the leaf templates provided in the PDF from Jo-Ann. I used the templates to make the leaves to serve as numbered labels for each of my pumpkins, which are secured to each one with floral wire…
…and the medium template was the perfect size for making the five bean bags for the game out of brightly colored felt.
I finished by mounting each of the pumpkins onto black foam board using Liquid Nails. (This was my cheater’s method; the tutorial calls for tying each pumpkin to the board with floral wire.)
In total, I was able to finish this game in just a couple of hours. I know the kids are going to love it!
To play, the children will be able to take turns tossing the bean bags into the pumpkins, and the number value on each pumpkin will represent how many points that pumpkin is worth. The most points after a designated number of tosses wins!
