Halloween T-Shirt Wreath

September 13, 2012 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

It’s time again for a fabulous idea from PS Contributors Nat and Holly from My Sister’s Suitcase. Today they are sharing this fabulous Halloween wreath that allows you to upcycle an item you might already have hiding at the back of your closet. Take it away, ladies!
***
Do you have any clothes in your closet that don’t fit but you just can’t get rid of? I’ve had this shirt forever, and after wearing it during my last pregnancy it needed to go. But I loved the black and white stripe! So I decided to cut it up and make my very first Halloween decoration for this year! It was super easy and cost me $5 total to make this {not-so} spooky Halloween wreath.

I used a pool noodle from the Dollar Tree (that I already had) make my wreath form. Do you know this little trick to getting the noodle to hold together so you can tape it? Cut a toilet paper roll up one of the long sides, roll it up and stick it inside before connecting. Perfect!

Cut up the side seam and across to make your long strips. Mine were about 4 inches wide and I cut all the way across the width of the shirt (until I ran out of shirt!) I ended up with about 6 strips.
You can wrap the fabric neatly and try to match up stripes, or go for the messier, bunched-up look like I did! I simply hot-glued on the back of the wreath every time I wrapped it around to make sure it would stay. I tried to keep all the ends of strips on the back of the wreath.

I love these cute sparkly halloween stickers from Big Lots –  $2 a set!

Cut whatever shape you want from card stock or scrap booking paper to make a pennant banner.

For the word scary I used some white canvas fabric and cut it into rectangles for a different look. Oh hello, cute little birdie!

To connect the banner pieces, I used (surprise!) Washi tape. It was so easy and fast. Lay out the tape, sticky side up and add your pieces. Make sure they’re in order! Then fold the top down and press.
The best part about using a noodle? I just used straight pins to pin my banners on the wreath. Which means I could move them around a million times until I liked how they looked! And I did.
Although this would look super cute on my front door, the weather where I live would totally destroy it. (If you have a screen door, that would help immensely!) So it is going to live on my little faux mantel indoors. I’m so happy with how it turned out!
I hope this got the gears turning for your own Halloween decor!

I just painted my front door orange and this wreath would look so good on it! I am hitting up the thrift store tomorrow – hope I find a black and white striped t-shirt…
