Friday Shout-Outs

October 22, 2010 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Happy Friday! Instead of doing a single Reader Spotlight today, I thought I’d switch things up a bit by giving a shout-out to a couple of readers who had questions or projects to share.

Kelli from Random Thoughts of a Super Mom had this question regarding my Halloween Goody Bags…

How in the world do you manage to make such perfect circles with your sewing machine?!? I always have a terrible time trying to do curves and circles!

They used to intimidate me, too, until I got the hang of it! My first suggestion when sewing curves is to take things very slowly. To achieve the uniform seam you’re looking for, you also have to be very diligent to keep a close eye on where the edge of your circle hits the seam guide on your machine. This topic was actually just discussed on the Craft Apple blog, where she gives a very thorough description with photos of exactly what you should strive for. I found it to be a very helpful tutorial, and the comments were a terrific source of insight, as well.

Speaking of Craft Apple, I would be remiss not to mention that I have carried a version of their Diaper Bag since my littlest was born (made for me by my uber talented mama), and I have found it to be extremely stylish and functional, too!

Lizzy from Road Theory shared her darling version of the Ruffled Candy Corn Tee. Don’t you love the candy corn ribbon in that matching bow?

But she didn’t stop there. Using the same technique, Lizzy went on to make a pumpkin shirt, too! Too fun!

(Have I told y’all lately how much I love it when you share the projects you make?? 🙂

On my Faux Rolled Hem Tutorial, Melissa from Kensington Cottage shared some additional rolled hem advice…

Most sewing machine makers now make a rolled hem foot, though it doesn’t look precisely like what you see on a serger. Another tip for doing a rolled hem is a thread called Woolly Nylon. It is filmy looking, but when you use it, it gives a more professional look.

Great tips, Melissa! On my previous machine, I had a rolled hem foot, and I loved it! I have never used the Woolly Nylon thread, but once I break out my serger, I will certainly give it a go.

Thank you all so very much for reading my blog! Have a marvelous weekend!
