Pottery Barn-Inspired Flatware Stockings (Swell Noel Idea #3)

October 5, 2011 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

I adore a good knock-off project that allows you to achieve catalog-caliber looks for a fraction of the price, and my sweet friend Tam from Sew Dang Cute Crafts is here today to share a terrific idea to do just that with your holiday table settings!

**

Hello all you Positively Splendid people! I’m Tam from Sew Dang Cute Crafts.

Some of you may know me as the host of the “Crafting with the Stars” competition {Currently in Round 1 BTW).

However, my site is also full of tutorials and projects that are mostly DIY and sewing, and I do venture out of my comfort zone every now and then in other areas – even paper crafting.

I’m so excited to be here today as part of Amy’s Swell Noel series while she’s taking some much-deserved time off with her family (and hopefully her new little one is here now).

The holdays are full of dinners and parties. When I saw this Flatware Stocking from Pottery Barn, I loved the look it gave the place setting.

However, I didn’t want to fork out $29, so I made my own and didn’t spend a dime since I had everything on hand.

For this project you will need:
– An old red sweater (if you know how to knit, then all you need is red yarn)
– Twine rope
– Red bells

STEP ONE: Find an old red sweater in your closet that you haven’t worn in 4+ years. If you know how to knit, then you don’t have to cut up an old sweater, however I don’t have that talent so I cut away.

STEP TWO: Print off a stocking template. I found this one HERE. I saved the image and printed it off. It was about 3” wide and 6” tall.

STEP THREE: Pin template to your sweater.
(I pinned mine to the bottom hem of the sweater so I didn’t have to worry about raw edges on the top of the stocking – giving the finished stocking a better look.)

Then cut about 1/2” away from the template through both layers of the sweater.
(I tried cutting right along the template and my stocking was WAY too skinny when sewn).

STEP FOUR: Pin the two stocking pieces RST (right sides together) and stitch together using 1/4” seam allowance, except along the top.

STEP FIVE: Turn right side out and tie some twine and two bells around the stocking.

STEP SIX: Repeat for however many place settings you need. Set your table and admire your pretty holiday place settings!

Thanks so much for having me here today Amy! I hope you enjoy your time snuggling your little bundle of joy. Babies are the best!!!

I hope you will all come say “hi” over at Sew Dang Cute Crafts.

I cannot say enough how much I adore this fabulous idea! What a festive touch to add to your holiday table!

ADORABLE!!!!!!! Yours looks exactly like the PB one! I really want to make these now. I am kicking myself because I just sent a red sweater to Goodwill!

I saw the Flatware Stockings, too, and am in the process of knitting my own. Wish I’d thought of cutting up a sweater! Much faster and easier. Nice job. In fact, I may abandon the knitting…

Even though I can knit, your way looks much faster and easier! You could also pick up an old sweater at a thrift store. Those little knitted stockings make good Christmas Tree ornaments as well.

Love the simplicity of the project and look of the knit for us non-knitters. I rarely comment on blogs (Sorry bloggers! As a blogger, I know that’s kind of frustrating), but this project inspired me!

I love this idea! Since I do not have a sewing machine, I am thinking of sewing the pieces together by hand. What do you think?

I think sewing by hand would work very well!
