Reader Q&A – Diaper Box Canvas Bins

February 12, 2011 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Can I just say that I have been absolutely astounded at the reception the tutorial for my Diaper Box Canvas Bins has received throughout the blogging world? Thank you so very much, from the bottom of my very heart!

Because I’ve received a number of questions and suggestions relating to this project via comments and email, I thought I would share those here in case any of you might benefit, as well.

Where did you buy your fabric for this project?

I purchased all of my fabric from Hobby Lobby. The outer fabric is a cream-colored heavy canvas, and the liner fabric is a printed cotton duck.

Don’t the supplies for these become expensive?

One thing you’ll learn quickly around here: I am very, very cheap frugal. 😉 I never buy fabric at full price, instead opting to cherry pick sales or use coupons. Places like Joann and Hobby Lobby almost always have a sale to take advantage of or a coupon to use. I would encourage you to check out their websites to get on their lists to receive special deals. Back to this project, though: I purchased all of the fabric here for around $12. The rest of the supplies (thread, ribbon, vinyl, etc.) I already had on hand. The similar bins I priced online ran upwards of $30 apiece, so I was thrilled to be able to get mine for under $5 each, even counting the usage of the supplies I had in my arsenal. I call that a bargain!

What are the dimensions of a diaper box?

Diaper boxes come in many sizes, so definitely measure your particular boxes before you calculate the amount of fabric you’ll need.

Could you use a different type of box for these?

Yes! Any box that has the dimensions you are looking for will work! Think of copy paper boxes, shoeboxes, mailing boxes – you name it!

And now, a couple of your suggestions…

Beyond having kiddos in diapers, but wanting to find some boxes to use for this project? Positively Splendid reader Sommer from Designer Garden had the fabulous idea to look into finding some free boxes on Freecyle.org. What a thrifty, practical idea! Thanks, Sommer!

A brilliant commenter over on Money Saving Mom’s post spotlighting this project offered this marvelous tip for saving even more money on your supplies: use canvas drop cloths to cover your boxes! Oh. My. Word. Why didn’t I think of that!? You could easily make an entire set of three (or more!) from one drop cloth. What a cost savings!

If you have a question or suggestion that I haven’t covered here, please let me know, and I’ll happily add it to the list!

Happy upcycling!

Why did you use glue rather than just using spray adhesive throughout the entire project?
