Learn how to embellish a straw clutch with easy DIY fabric yo-yo’s for this simple handmade accessory idea. This is a great way to use fabric scraps to create a unique clutch handbag to carry!
I love to have a small clutch handbag to carry along on date nights with my husband or girls’ nights. I found a great straw clutch at Michaels a few weeks back, and I decided to personalize it with some handmade fabric yo-yo’s and a pretty vintage-y button from my stash. This project took less than 15 minutes to complete from start to finish, but each time I’ve carried it, I’ve gotten so many compliments! Keep reading for all the details for making a yo-yo straw clutch of your own.
Yo-Yo Embellished Straw Clutch Supplies
- Small Fabric Scraps
- Needle and Thread
- Straw Clutch from Michaels
- Hot Glue
The moment I saw this fun clutch at Michaels, I knew it had to come home with me. It’s the perfect carte blanche for personalizing all sorts of ways, and at right around $10 (or even less with a coupon!), it is a serious bargain.
For my project, I used my free templates and handy fabric yo-yo tutorial to create three yo-yo’s from some of my favorite fabric scraps. I created two 1.5″ fabric yo-yo’s and one 2″ yo-yo for my bag, but you could also add more yo-yo’s or even just one very large yo-yo if you prefer. There are lots of options to make this project your own!
When the fabric yo-yo’s were complete, I affixed them in a row with hot glue along the center of the clutch’s flap closure, overlapping the edges slightly.
I’ve had this pretty cameo button in my stash for ages, and I decided it was the perfect way to embellish the larger yo-yo in the center. To secure it in place, I used a small dab of hot glue. Super simple!
Total time for this fun DIY accessory project: 15 minutes!
Like I said before, every time I carry this cute clutch, I have at least one person ask me where I bought it.
I love that all of the embellishments I used for this project came from my stash of supplies. It feels so great to use up what I already have on hand. Fabric yo-yo’s are some of the very best scrap-busting projects around!
