DIY Rustic Wood Cake Stand

March 26, 2018 By Amy @ Positively Splendid

Learn how to make a DIY rustic wood cake stand. This DIY cake stand has two tiers made from wood slices and is a lovely way to serve cakes and cupcakes, or even to use as a unique home decoration!

Did you know that cake stands are not only perfect for their conventional use for displaying cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats, but also for home decor purposes? When planning ahead for setting a pretty table for entertaining, I always find myself grabbing a tiered cake stand to use as a centerpiece. They give such great height to a tablescape. My DIY rustic wood slice tiered cake stand is a great fit for the farmhouse decor vibe that is so popular, and it is surprisingly simple to make with just a few basic supplies. Let me show you how!

DIY Rustic Wood Cake Stand Supplies

  • 2 wood slices, one smaller and one larger
  • Felt (optional)
  • Pinking shears (optional)
  • Unfinished wood candlestick
  • FolkArt Milk Paint
  • FolkArt Milk Paint Brush
  • E-6000 adhesive

How to Make a Rustic Wood Cake Stand

If desired, cut a piece of felt with pinking shears that is just smaller than the larger wood slice that will form the bottom of the cake stand. Use E-6000 to affix the felt piece to the wood piece to protect any surface from being scratched while the cake stand is in use.

Use the brush to apply 1-2 coats of the paint to the wood candlestick, allowing the paint to dry to the touch between coats, about 15 minutes. Set the candlestick aside to dry completely, at least 1 hour.

Use the E-6000 to affix the bottom of the candlestick piece to the top of the larger wood slice, so that the candlestick is precisely centered on top of the wood piece.

Apply a generous amount of the adhesive on the top surface of the candlestick, and place the smaller wood slice piece on top so that it is precisely centered. Set the cake stand aside to give the glue time to dry, at least 3 hours.

Your DIY tiered wood cake stand is finished!

This wood slab cake stand would be lovely at a rustic wedding used as a serving piece or to display table numbers.

You can paint the wood candlestick piece between the two wood tiers any color you like to go with any theme or motif. I do love the FolkArt Milk Paint for this project, because it has such a great rustic finish that allows the wood grain to show through.
